Métal rare, blanc, très brillant, ductile à froid, que l'on rencontre dans les minerais de terres rares (symbole Hf). L'hafnium est encore peu utilisé industriellement, on en fait cependant des cathodes de tubes à rayons X et des filaments de lampes à incandescence (BADER-TH. 1962).
Prononc. et Orth. : []. L'hafnium (supra), mais le hafnium (Lar. encyclop., Encyclop. univ. t. 16 1973, p. 1066, s.v. zirconium). Étymol. et Hist. 1923 (J. phys. et Radium, p. 387). De Hafnia, anc. nom lat. de Copenhague; suff. -ium. Nom donné par G. Hevesy de Heves [1885-1966] et D. Coster [1889-1950], d'apr. le lieu où, en 1923, ils ont découvert cet élément.
